Baltimore city, MD reached a record high of 63.35 in January of 2012 and a record low of 59.50 in January of 2018. As of the 2010 census, about 27 percent of children lived with a single parent, and the vast majority (about 81 percent) of those are single mothers. Studies show that social, emotional, and economic problems are linked with the upbringing of children.

Most female youth raised in Urban communities are raised in broken homes by single mothers, live in drug infested areas, subjected to violence, crime, neglect, foster care, and poverty are more likely to fare worse on a number of dimensions, including their school achievement, their physical, social, mental, and emotional development. They are at greater risk of parental abuse and neglect, more likely to become teen parents, juvenile delinquents, promiscuous, substance abusers, full of rage, isolated, depressed, high school drops outs, struggle with low self-esteem, and all around misunderstood. Children raised by single mothers constitutes a large portion of our population. Whether or when society decides to reevaluate their definition of family is unclear. The more pressing issue at hand is whether or not there are negative effects on the children from either walk of life. These different dynamics may produce a long-lasting impact on well-being in adulthood. Most women that were raised under these circumstances suffer from emotional trauma such as abandonment issues, substance abuse, domestic violence,  self mutilation, low standards, promiscuity, unhealthy relationships, trust issues, incarceration, low self esteem, homelessness, the lack of receiving and showing affection, poverty and single motherhood. DO YOU SEE THE CYCLE! They unconsciously inherit the same mind patters of their environment.

IN OTHER WORDS, evidence indicates that socioeconomic status affects family stability, including parenting practices and developmental outcomes for children. Ongoing, relentless stress, such as living in a crime-ridden neighborhood and experiencing traumatic events that occur repeatedly affects both the parent and the child. Emotional and psychological trauma is the result of extraordinarily stressful events that shatter your sense of security, making you feel helpless in a dangerous world. Psychological trauma can leave you struggling with upsetting emotions, memories, and anxiety that won’t go away. It can also leave you feeling numb, disconnected, and unable to trust other people. Traumatic experiences often involve a threat to life or safety, but any situation that leaves you feeling overwhelmed and isolated can result in trauma, even if it doesn’t involve physical harm. It’s not the objective circumstances that determine whether an event is traumatic, but your subjective emotional experience of the event. The more frightened, hopeless, and helpless you feel, the more likely you are to be traumatized.
